The former cemetery chapel next to Braunau’s parish church of St Stephan was secularized at the end of the 18th century on orders of Emperor Joseph II. Its spire was destroyed, but the gothic crypt can still be visited. The rib vaults are carried by eight massive, octagonal pillars. After WW2 the crypt was turned into an atmospheric memorial for the victims of war. The central memorial itself is an aluminum block that shows a dead soldier and is a work of sculptor Alois Dorn.
