Herzogsburg - Bezirksmuseum Braunau am Inn

The collections of the Braunau District Museum are on display at two historic buildings that date back to the Gothic era

The Herzogsburg is Braunau’s main museum. It informs its visitors about the turbulent and interesting history of our town. Big charts tell of stunning discoveries which even date back to prehistoric times and guide the visitor through the ages. The museum is also host to an exhibition about two of Braunau’s most famous residents: Hans Staininger and Johann Philipp Palm.

Hans Steininger once was mayor of Braunau. When a huge fire destroyed Braunau in 1567, he tripped over his extremely long beard, broke his neck and died. The 445 year-old beard can still be seen in the museum.  Johann Philipp Palm was shot in 1806 on command of Napoleon for publishing books criticizing his regime.
Furthermore, the museum hosts an extensive collection of old keys, various models of the town, weapons, carriages and a collection of fire extinguishers as well as an old photographic laboratory. A special attraction around Christmastime is the huge, mechanically operated nativity scene.

Experience the past, with the technology of today.

The Middle Ages, a time full of stories about knights, maidens and Castles.

The QR Code Rally “Middle Ages” is especially designed for kids and school classes from the 3rd to the 5th grade in cooperation with the University of Passau.

Did you know that a body armor of a man, who lived 600 years ago, fits an eight year old boy today?
